​You have many experiences that can serve you well in affiliate marketing and finding the right niche products. Even if you are not a so-called "expert," your years and insights far surpass ​many others. ​

Picking a Niche That Makes You Happy

Getting into online marketing does not mean sacrificing enjoyment for a paycheck. You can merge your interests with profitability. So let's say you're finally retired and can't wait to spend every day playing golf.

You could start a niche golf site giving tips and recommending or reviewing niche products related to golf. Amazon sells all sorts of golf equipment and trainers that you could earn a commission on.

Topics like fishing, knitting, cooking, and saving your marriage are all hot sellers. They may be exciting and profitable for you to tap into. There are thousands of lucrative niche products that would make you smile. So keep the things you enjoy in mind as you begin hunting a niche of your own that will bring happiness to your life.

I have a word of caution about niches and niche products. While I love playing golf, I did not like creating a business related to golf. Playing golf is fun; writing about golf or golf equipment not so much.

Picking a Profitable Niche

When it comes to launching a business online, there are many reasons for pursuing this type of career. You might want a purpose in life – the ability to start over fresh and do something you love.

But for many people, income is a significant factor in deciding to get into online marketing. So you'll want to focus on a niche that combines satisfaction with income potential.

When you're looking at a profit-based niche, first consider whether there's an audience.

If you go too narrow, it might be harder to make money if there are few niche products available. Make sure that it's a niche or demographic that pays for information or tangible items, also.

Some niches lean toward tire kickers – or people unwilling to pay any money for advice or tips. Recipes are a good example. People love to download recipes but are not willing to pay.

"Dummies" is a platform for making learning easier.

Dummies specializes in making complex subjects easy to understand. If Dummies has a book, it means they have identified, researched, and offered a solution to a problem.

It's more profitable if you can find a niche that combines tangible and digital marketing. A digital product might be a book on "losing weight with smoothies." While a physical product might be blenders that make the smoothies.

Anti-aging is a great niche that's profitable and perfect for older people to get into. People want to know all sorts of information such as protecting memory, getting fit, or keeping wrinkles at bay.

Of course, think of the tangibles that go along with a topic like that. There are thousands of niche products for anti-aging in the beauty and fitness categories. All you have to do is lead the way and guide them to the right products!

Picking a Niche Based on Your Knowledge

Some of you may have life long careers that you can now put into action online as an entrepreneur. Whether you ​are a mechanic, a plumber, a lawyer, or a teacher, people are willing to pay for the information you share.

You can create a career that allows you to share your expertise and experience. Then you cash in on recommendations you make. And don't be afraid to get into a niche where you're not an expert, too.

Many people love learning right alongside others.

So you can start a blog. Share your journey of learning something new. Let your readers see your successes and setbacks. And they'll still enjoy following your progress.

In fact, many people say it takes pressure off of them. And makes them feel more comfortable learning from a fellow newbie. They are uncomfortable learning from someone who talks over their heads. Or don't remember what it was like to be a beginner.

Trend-Based Niche Markets

Some topics are trendy, and you can make money on those.

For example, the Zika virus was prominent in the news for a while. Now we have the spotted Lanternfly insect infestation, which devastates plants and gardens. You could create specific eBooks on protecting yourself from insect-borne illnesses.

You could also create blog posts recommending the best solutions to trending problems. A blog might include repellant, nets, and even more expensive items like traps. Products that result in commissions to you.

The major disadvantage of following a trend is it will end at some point. Then you will have to find another trend to capitalize upon.

Evergreen Niche Markets

On the other end of the spectrum is the evergreen niche market. That might be a bit broader such as an expansive survival site. A site where you could recommend things that are always on the minds of people.

Anti-aging and weight loss are two more examples of evergreen niche markets. There will always be people fighting the aging process and trying to lose weight. But there will also be trending patterns such as fad diets like keto. Ketogenic diets have become popular recently. Debt relief is big business now. People are looking for ways to get out of debt.

Merging Niches for Broader Appeal

Another cool way to pick a niche is to merge topics! For example, combining anti-aging and weight loss or golf for fitness. You could blend things like gardening and stress relief. It would open the door to promot​ing stress management and gardening products.

But, make sure there's some sort of logical connection between the two. For example, don't stick cooking and anti-aging on the same site. If you want to share cooking with anti-aging, with herbs and foods that turn back the clock, then that's fine!

Or, don't even merge niches – keep it broad like, "Cooking" and then you can cover all sorts of cooking – cooking for:

  • ​Weight loss
  • Dinner parties
  • ​Preparing for the Holidays
  • ​Food allergies
  • Picky eaters
  • Instant Pot cooking
  • Grilling
  • Cast iron cooking
  • and others

By keeping it broad, you never run out of ideas to share with readers. Each blog post on your site serves as an entry point for someone to get to know you and your lessons.

Drilling Down to Dominate a Narrow Niche

Of course, you might start out thinking a broad topic, like fishing or golf. But to some, it may seem overwhelming trying to teach all that. Instead, start with a specific and narrowed interest in the topic.

You can narrow down and position yourself as the authority for a smaller audience. Focus on serving a small audience rather than a large one.

So for instance, you could do a site focused on:

  • Getting rid of (or minimizing) wrinkles
  • Bass fishing
  • Cooking for ​diabetics
  • ​Improving your golf short game
  • Raising Chickens (or homesteaders)

You can also start out with a full site, see which topics you end up enjoying most. Then branch off into smaller subjects over time. If they're all connected, your audience can find more information in a similar topic.

For example, someone might come in on your anti-wrinkle site, and like what they see. So when the readers see a link back to your primary anti-aging site, they might click it. And go read about whatever you have to offer. You may have information on fitness for individuals, brain health, and more.
