3 Essential Affiliate Marketing Tips for Beginners

If you are looking for help to make money online in your spare time, then you are in the right place. I have three part-time affiliate marketing tips that should help.

You may agree that it can be frustrating looking for affiliate marketing information that is legit. So many scammers promote opportunities that claim to make money overnight or push Done For You (DFY) programs.

It is NOT as easy as they make it out to be.

If it is true, then why are there so many people making $0 month after month?

Today, I am going to share some of my secrets with you. I have been doing this internet marketing thingy since 1996. I started with a side hustle to make some extra money. I needed extra money to pay bills and save a little bit extra.

You are here because you may need extra money to:

  • pay bills
  • save for retirement
  • go on a vacation
  • pay off some debt
  • any other reason.

Over the years, I have tried just about all the online income-generating strategies in the known world. I even dabbled in multi-level marketing. However, recruiting people and building a sales team just was not my thing.

I have had $0 months. And I have had $1,000 days. And everything in between. Most of my income comes from affiliate marketing. Some revenue comes from advertising income (Adsense).

I have been scammed a few times, bought more worthless products than I care to remember. And have made a few bucks (well, actually quite a few bucks or why would I still be doing this?)

I learned you could not just pick a product or service at one of the affiliate networks (JVZoo, ClickBank, Amazon, ShareaSale or any of the other affiliate networks) and start promoting your affiliate link. I don't care where you advertise, whether it is Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, Bing Ads, blogs, or ad networks.

If you do, you will almost always burn through more cash than you earn in commissions. It takes bottomless pockets. Neil Patel spent $12,512 a day on Facebook, experimenting with building brand awareness.

With far smaller budgets, we need to be smart about our affiliate marketing.

So, with that said, I will share my three essential affiliate marketing tips with you.

1. Stick to One Niche

I am a member of the Wealthy Affiliate training community. I see too many members give up when they don't achieve their expected success within their chosen niche. They start changing and hopping around, hoping to find the jackpot.

The power of the Wealthy Affiliate training program is the identification and selection of a niche in which to create a business. The concept is simple.

Identify your passion, share it with others, and make money online.

The training focuses on identifying a member's interests, hobbies, passions, or things that they enjoy. Once a member has identified a niche, then they are taught to build and develop a website to reach their targeted audience.

However, when people do not meet their profit expectations, they switch to the make-money-online niche.

Choosing more than one niche is a big mistake, in my opinion.  Among the three affiliate marketing tips, sticking to ONE niche that you know and like is most important.

If your thing is dogs, then build a site around dogs. Share your best stories and products you use or tried. Share your worst mistakes. Show your readers you are human just like them. You can write all about it, make videos about it - however you are most comfortable sharing your story with people.

Just don't stray off the topic of dogs and try to sell non-dog related affiliate products in the Internet marketing niche. Your audience will lose interest and see right through your sales pitch. However, if you're showing them how to raise a puppy or adopt a dog, then you tell them you downloaded the plans from x site, well, that's different.

That's how you make lots of sales over and over.

2. Know What You Are Promoting

Seriously, REALLY know it.

The most natural products to promote are the ones you use and like yourself or used but did not like. When I review my previous product promotions, I can quickly identify the top performers like the ones I liked and used myself. Not always, but usually.

If unfamiliar with your product, do lots of research.

That is why it is so important to promote stuff you would buy or have bought yourself. You can show potential buyers all the good and the bad points of the product. That makes your promotions REAL and GENUINE.

Here is an example from a recent promotion. I had problems using Instagram to promote my business. I kept hearing about how great Instagram is. But I never seemed able to master Instagram because they only allow one website link in the member's bio area. That's tough on affiliate marketers!

Then, I ran across an Instagram app called Shorby.

I took the free trial and used the app on my Instagram account. I liked the app so much that I paid for a subscription when the trial ended. And I wrote a blog post about Shorby showing how I used the app with Instagram.

However, you cannot buy all products you review and recommend. However, you should be an expert. Legendary ad copywriter, Joe Sugarman says,

"You must become an expert on a product, service or anything you write about to really be effective.”

You can learn more about Joe and copywriting in his book, "The Adweek Copywriting Handbook."

3. Promote As You Would to Your Mom

When you are affiliate marketing, you should create product reviews about the products you promote. Content includes website/blog posts, email messages, videos, and graphics. These help potential buyers gather information about products or pre-sell them make a decision.

Trying to sell a product is where I see many affiliate marketers go wrong.

They try to make the sale. They make a sales pitch like a badly used car salesman.

An affiliate marketer's "job" is to lead a prospective purchaser to click on their affiliate link to the vendor's sales page. The purpose of the vendor's sales page is to lead the person from a prospective purchaser to becoming a customer.

So instead of selling, you need to keep it real. You want to help visitors solve their problem by respecting and relating to their situation.

Talk about real-world things. Keep it light and pressure-free. They'll appreciate it and want more.

And yes, they might even buy using your link.

I find this type of marketing, not only more fun but more effective. People pay more attention to you when you are not in their face screaming louder than the next guy.

Try this technique, and I guarantee you will start seeing better results with your affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing Tips Conclusion

Earning serious affiliate marketing commissions takes patience, persistence, and effort. Slapping together some thin content does not cut it. Starting a part-time affiliate marketing business can lead to giving up that 9 to 5 job and going full-time.

You should be creative. And learn from as many expert marketers as you can.

Follow the stuff they do that works. Do what the experts do.

The bottom line result is more profits in less time and effort.
