How to Find Keywords for a Website

I have often been asked, “how do I find keywords for my website?”

There are several ways, the old-fashioned, manual way or a keyword research tool. Start with a general term like “baby food” and the Google search bar will show recent popular searches. The next time you do a search using Google, take notice of how Google returns some additional suggested search terms (keywords).

I prefer to use one of the popular keyword research tools to save time and effort of manually finding profitable keywords. More about this later.

Introduction to finding keywords for your website

When I first started out building an internet business 20 years ago, I was totally clueless about keywords and optimizing my websites using Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques. Back in those days, bulk email marketing was the top method of getting visitors to websites. But the the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 changed everything. (That’s a different story).

I was totally in the “build it and he will come” mode (quote from the movie, “Field of Dreams”).  Yes, I was really dreaming this strategy would work. I did not know the difference between keyword and keyhole.

But I learned!

Keyword is defined as a significant word or phrase that defines your product or service. A keyword is used by search engine users as search terms in their search for information or products on the internet. Through Google, for example, the search engine matches the searchers search terms with the relevant and timely content on websites.

How to use keywords on your website

The best way to show you how to use keywords on your website is to show an example of a top-ranked website and how they use keywords. The following example shows an analysis of the top ranked webpage from a Google search of “homemade baby food.” The main keywords are homemade baby food followed by baby food as confirmed by the SpyFu Keyword Research Tool results shown below.

The following screen shot shows the top results for the keyword “homemade baby food.” The company that appears in the first position in the Google results appears to be the largest baby food site in the world! At this point, I went to the webpage to analyze their keyword usage.

A review of the top ranked website in the above Google results page shows how they used their keywords on their home page. A number of different keywords are highlighted in yellow. Not only are keywords used in the website URL, they are used in the page title, menu, sub-titles and first paragraph as well as the first sentence.

Not only are keywords used in the visible portion of the webpage, keywords are used in the meta description, image alternate text and image file names. This website is a good example of how to use keywords for SEO.

The following screen shot shows the “behind the scenes” view of a webpage using the Blue Button application. (Blue Button is a Google Chrome application.) Use Blue Button on any web page, and you will get an instant, no-frills index of its building blocks. You also receive information on SEO, code and graphic components: from title tags and meta description, to scripts and stylesheets, to images and fonts. Note: the Meta Description includes a portion of the website URL and the website title. The red arrow points to the Meta Description.

Per Wikipedia, SEO, or search engine optimization, is “the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a web search engine’s unpaid results — often referred to as “natural,” “organic,” or “earned” results.”

Analysis of the website shows how effective they are in using keywords throughout the site. Menu titles, subject titles and article titles show words related to baby food. Words you would expect to find with the main keywords. Words like “kids, peas, other vegetables, wholesome, infant” and the like.

The following screen shot shows an analysis of the website using the SpyFu.com keyword research tool. SpyFu has identified 6,000 organic keywords. The results also show that all the traffic is from Google searches. Paid advertising is not used to generate website traffic.
