Thank you for your service to your country!

And thank you for visiting Home Business for Veterans.

The purpose of Home Business for Veterans is to educate, train and help military veterans (and anyone else) learn how to create and operate a successful online home business.

There are many home business opportunities for veterans. Learn how to identify the good ones while avoiding the scams. We are not writing about the possibility of buying franchises.

There are many resources online about franchise opportunities. As we complete our research on financing including grants for veterans to start a business, we will add the information to our resources page. Read more about Home Business Basic Training.

We all are experienced with training. From basic training through advanced training, unit training, large scale training, joint training, international training and major exercises with coalition partners and allies. This site introduces you to home businesses, how to get started, setting goals, planning for success, internet marketing, avoiding scams and more.

Have you thought about starting your own internet-based home business?

This is something everyone has thought about at one time or another.

Starting a home businessParticularly, on days gone wrong. A bad day at work. Failure for promotion. Getting laid off with no back-up plan. Not having enough money to pay an unexpected bill. A desire to do something else. Just plain tired of your financial condition and are unhappy as a result.

Sounds bad doesn’t it?

There is good news!

Based on a 2012 study by the Small Business Administration, 52% of U.S. companies operate as home businesses. Many of today’s biggest brand names were established by stay-at-home moms – (Dorothy) Gerber, Mrs. (Debbi) Fields, and Julie Aigner-Clark (Baby Einstein), to name but a few. And don’t forget Apple or Amazon. Jeff Bezos founded in 1994 as an online bookstore and it was completely run out of his garage.

Starting an internet-based home business has never been easier for veterans or anyone for that matter.

Billions of people are online at any given time. Sharing information, researching for product information, shopping, socializing just to mention a few of the things people do online.

Imagine an internet store that never closes. People looking and shopping 24/7. Kevin Systrom, co-founder of Instagram, says, “If you’ve got an idea, start today. There’s no better time than now to get going.”

The really good news is your military skills will serve you well building a home business. I wrote an article on applying military skills shows you how they apply.

Life of an entrepreneur

Do you have a vision of your future?

I know for many of us veterans during deployment, we dreamed of and talked about getting back to the real world. And we go through the struggle of finding work or a new challenge. Or being in a job that sucks or is wasting your talent.

I remember the challenges of supporting a family on my military income. Even with my wife working, it was a struggle getting to the next payday.

Saving for the future? Not a chance. That is why I chose to start a home business when the opportunity arose. It was to supplement my income so I could save for retirement. If you are not ready to start a home business, then finding ways to reduce your expenses can help.

  1. Hi Glen,
You have asked on WA for our opinion of your website… Well, all I can say is…. I think it is amazing. It is set out very well. Great background & articles. Love your header photo 🙂 & your catagories are comprehensive, a job well done 🙂 Cheers, Linda

    1. Thanks so much, Linda. I appreciate you taking time to stop by and comment. Best of success to you!

  2. Hi Glen, thanks for such an inspirational article. I also think that veterans have the self-discipline and potential to build a successful online business.

Most people don’t strive at what they do and just want instant gratification. People tend to give up easily and abdicate of their dreams, inventing some excuse for that.

It’s undeniable that building an online business takes time and effort. But it’s achievable by anyone with strong motivation.

    All the best

    1. Thank you for commenting, Stefan. I appreciate you taking the time to stop by and read. I think people tend to be too optimistic as to how much time it takes to be successful with their businesses.

  3. Hey Glen
I feel stupid saying this website is awesome, but it really is. I just started adding content to my site and thought I was doing a good job until I came here. The detail and images and videos are compelling. when I set up a page I diagnose it with SEOQuake it is a free app. your site passed every test. No alt tags on three images is the only thing it could find. After 24 different checks. I have a question. How did you get the videos and pictures centered on the pages. I tried using html center tags but I must be doing something wrong.
Aside from that your site has inspired me to do a much better job on my site. Thank You.

    1. Hi Bill, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate you taking the time to review and your kind words. I set the image properties in the media library when I upload the files. I also use the visual editor tool. If I am going to center any with html, I use the image class attribute tag. I don’t know if the WP theme CSS style sheets would prevent images from being centered.

  4. Great intro for why we should see about having and doing an online business. For me it’s to keep the standard of living I already have. You hear about making money then retire, and you’ll be able to live on less compared to when you worked because you will not need as much. Somebody is daydreaming because the cost of everything keeps going up and who said we had enough while we were working.

You have the right answer by having an online business and make extra money. I’m with you!

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment, Travis!

  5. My father is an unemployed and disabled veteran. I wish he would’ve seen something like this a long time ago since he is so unhappy. This is a great opportunity for veterans who can’t go to a normal job or have disabilities preventing them from getting a job. I will be sharing this with him and hopefully it can help him find fulfillment and make him a solid income.

    1. Thank you for visiting and commenting, Jeanette. I appreciate you taking the time. Sorry to hear about your father. That is the main reason I started this site. To provide more information and alternatives for veterans.

  6. I am a wife and a mother of two wonderful veterans. And my youngest son is still active duty. And I know their struggles as they adapt to civilian life. And their struggles in building an income for their family and retirement years.

Thank you for your service and for this website.

  7. Hi Glen
Brilliant article, I am going to check out how your military skills can help you with your online business. And no I am not in the military or plan to be ever but that just sounds like a very interesting read!
I love working online from home. I do it so I can be there for my children.

    1. Thanks Lynne. Veterans, at times, have a hard time relating their military-learned skills to civilian skills. Consequently, they don’t always convey their skill sets very well in a civilian business environment. Also, many vets don’t realize the size or complexity of their skill sets.

  8. Loved it! I think this service is so needed for our vets! I always try to think of ways to find and gather as many resources for them as I can. I honestly believe owning your own business is the only way to become financially independent. I think it unfair for them to be forced to wait for resources. Thank you for this article.

    1. Hi Audra. The Veterans Administration sure has lots of problems. A big portion is not their fault. Mostly budget driven and the government not willing to provide resources. President Bush actually tried reducing the VA budget during the Gulf War even though they knew there would be an increase in demand from returning vets. VA’s share of problems are mostly bad management.

  9. I thought your article was great Glen! What a wonderful way to provide hope to Veterans that may be looking for opportunities to provide for themselves and their families. I personally know of a couple of veterans who have served our country through several deployments, and are having difficulty securing employment in the private marketplace as the private sector does not seem value their skills. The reasons you provide for starting a home business are all excellent ones. 3 of my biggest reasons are financial and time freedom, and personal fulfillment. I pray that your article is able to provide hope for a Veteran who needs it today. Thank you!

    1. Thanks so much for your comments. I appreciate you taking the time to review and comment. So many people try to take advantage of veterans with all sorts of scams. I added a page to this site that showcases online businesses/websites developed by Wealthy Affiliate members who also happen to be veterans. Please take a look at

  10. very interesting article concept for starting your own online business especially for veterans. People consider starting their own online business for a variety of reasons, many disabled veterans could go this route to earn their own income and get their own self respect back again. Many veterans have emotional issues preventing them from able to work in the public job service and some physical issues as well, this could possibly be an answer for them.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to review and comment. I agree. Having a home business is a viable alternative to those who are unable to commute to a work site or in an environment requiring social interaction with others.

  11. Nice article! I think it’s so important to offer these opportunities to veterans especially. All of your points are spot on about why there are so many ways you can have success in this business. It really sucks being laid off, or having to live the 9-5 life. For many people, the fear of losing their job, or having a back up is a great motivator. Great intro to your site. 🙂

    1. Thank you kindly, Jessie. There is so much less stress working from home. No nasty commutes or bosses. And you can be as productive as you want.
